No Smoking - Indian Film 2007

Director: Anurag Kashyap
Producer: Kumar Mangat, Vishal Bharadwaj
Cast: John Abraham, Ayesha Takia, Paresh Rawal, Ranvir Shorey, Joy Fernandes, Jessy Randhawa
Music: Vishal Bharadwaj
Lyrics: Gulzar

In "No Smoking", filmmaker-composer Vishal Bharadwaj uses his unique style to make each song stand out. Even if the songs do not do well, they will certainly get noticed. The album starts of with "Ash tray" in which singer Deva Sen Gupta's voice stands out. Gulzar's lyrics are quite meaningful and Bharadwaj has kept the music subtle, giving more importance to the singer's rendition. A slow track with a different feel to it, "Ash tray" has the chance to do well.

In "Jab Bhi Cigarette", Sunidhi Chauhan attempts a completely different genre and sounds very unlike herself. However, the track is unlikely to find favour for long. With Sufi as its base, "Kash Laga" comes in next, which, again, has been composed keeping the theme of the movie in mind. All the three singers, Sukhwinder Singh, Daler Mehendi and Vishal Bharadwaj, have sung very well and could pass off as original Sufi singers. In spite of all its plus points, "Kash Laga" may not do too well.

A situational track, "Phoonk de" is sung well by Sukhwinder Singh. He manages to grab attention. Rekha Bharadwaj attempts the second version of "Phoonk De", which is sure to get noticed due to the distinctive fusion of Rekha's deep voice with the dhol beats. It is an interesting number.

"No Smoking" songs are unconventional, yet catchy. Bharadwaj does justice to the subject and has set a completely different standard for composers in the future.

Laaga Chunari Mein Daag - Indian Film 2007

Director/Writer: Pradeep Sarkar , Aditya Chopra
Starring: Jaya Bachchan , Rani Mukherjee , Konkona Sen Sharma

The soundtrack of "Laaga Chunari Mein Daag" has a very refreshing feel to it, but the compositions might not match up to Moitra's earlier works that have created ripples.
Shantanu Moitra returns after his classic "Parineeta" to compose a soundtrack for the multi-starrer "Laaga Chunari Mein Daag". Swanand Kirkire provides the lyrics for the title track "Chunari mein daag", a brilliant piece of music. Vocals by Shubha Mudgal are a treat as her amazing voice does complete justice to the song. Someone who deserves special mention here is Mita Vashisht, known to have assisted Mudgal earlier, who contributes by reciting certain words at regular intervals.

"Ehi thaiyaa motiya", an all-in-all classical number finds a place in the soundtrack with Rekha Bharadwaj rendering it. Seeming to be a song picturised in a 'kotha', it has all the essentials that such a track usually has - tabla and background vocals - giving it a completely authentic feel. A masti song comes in next with "Hum toh aise hai", a rare combination of Sunidhi Chauhan and Shreya Ghoshal singing together. Listening to the track is an enjoyable experience. With feel-good lyrics, the two female singers are joined by Swanand Kirkire and Pranab Biswas. The song, being an introductory piece and with a small town touch, succeeds in catching one's attention.

In 'Ik teekhi teekhi si ladki' we get to hear K.K. and Shreya's effortless vocals. The pleasant track is light, sweet and melodic. "Kachchi kaliyan" turns out to be absolutely different from the earlier lot. A fast and peppy number, it has K.K., Sonu Nigam, Shreya Ghoshal and Sunidhi Chauhan providing the vocals. It includes certain folk lyrics interspersed with some English words too! A sure shot entertainer, this track is packed with lots of energy and is a typical number to be played during Indian weddings.

Johny Gaddar - Indian Movie 2007

"Johnny Gaddar" is completely unconventional and belongs to an era gone by. It is a complete surprise, especially when the composers happen to be Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy. Composer trio, Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy, take over the mike to sing "Move your body", a very retro but interesting song. Hinglish lyrics add to the funky appeal of the song.

An amazing instrumental track that should do well being set in the backdrop of the film, is "Revenge of the 70s", which actually sounds like music from the 70s. Again with elaborate musical arrangements, the track is catchy right from the start.

To expect Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy to come out with music of this genre was quite unexpected but they have done a fantastic job. Whether the album is going to be a hit with the audiences is doubtful, as fans of such a genre are quite limited. Yet, if the movie does well, a lot of credit ought to go the composers as well.

Saawariya - Indian Film 2007

Cast:
Ranbir Kapoor, Rani Mukerjee, Salman khan, Sonam Kapoor
Singers: Alka Yagnik, Shail Hada, Richa Sharma, Parthiv Gohil, Shreya Ghoshal, Kunal Ganjawala, Shaan
Lyricist: Sameer, Nusrat Badr
Music Director: Monty Sharma, Sanjay Leela Bhansali

Many music lovers have been looking forward to the soundtrack of "Saawariya" because the music of Sanjay Leela Bhansali's films is usually appealing. And this time too, with Monty Sharma composing the music and Sameer and Nusrat Badr writing the lyrics, the songs of "Saawariya" ought to strike a chord with the masses.

"Chabeela" comes in as a pleasant surprise for a couple of reasons including the fact that Alka Yagnik has rendered a song after a long time. Composed by Monty Sharma, the music compliments Alka's voice beautifully, making it a very likeable track.

"Daras bina nahin chain" is a classical piece of music, which doesn't end up being boring. High on romance is "Jab se tere naina". It seems like an appropriate Sanjay Leela Bhansali song. Sung by Shaan, who usually does justice to romantic numbers, the music of "Jab se..." is a good effort. The title track "Saawariya" is an amazing number that gets you humming along. Shail Hada, who renders this piece, is going to be flooded with offers for singing after the sure-shot success of this track.

Bhansali adorns the cap of a music director by composing "Thode badmash". As an individual audio piece, it would in no way rake in any money or popularity. So, we're only left to see whether it suits the situation in the movie. Almost all the songs in the soundtrack of "Saawariya" are high on melody, music with a classical touch and poetic lyrics, which raise the standards of quality music in Bollywood. But what remains to be seen is whether this album clicks with the public or not.

Om Shanti Om - Indian Film 2007

Cast
: Shah Rukh Khan, Shreyas Talpade, Deepika Padukone, Arjun Rampal, and Malaika Arora Khan
Director: Farah Khan

This film focuses on Om (Shah Rukh Khan) who grows up in the seventies. This is the time when he meets Shanti (Dipika Padukone), the love of his life but shortly thereafter suffers an untimely demise. Om is immediately reincarnated and the story flash forwards to the present day.

Haunted by memories of his past life and his true love, Om attempts to solve the mystery of his death, and also reunite with Shanti, the love of his past life. Om Shanti Om is said to be inspired by the Hollywood movie, Chances Are, where a man is reincarnated and instantaneously attempts to find the wife from his previous life.

Om Shanti Om has over 30 well known Bollywood stars including Salman Khan, Rani Mukherjee, Kajol, Sanjay Dutt, Priyanka Chopra, Preity Zinta and Saif Ali Khan putting in a guest appearance for a special song and dance sequence in the film, a concept recently used by Farah's brother, Sajid Khan in the opening number of his film, Heyy Babyy. Farah Khan's husband, Shirish Kunder (director of Jaan E Mann) is in charge of Om Shanti om's editing. He was previously involved in the same department for Farah's debut movie, Main Hoon Na.

Om Shanti Om features Shah Rukh Khan in the lead role and introduces Deepika Padukone as his love interest. As you already know, Om Shanti Om is the highly expected movie by Farah Khan starring the one and only Shahrukh Khan along with Deepika Padukone, Shreyas Talpade, Arjun Rampal and Kiron Kher playing the important roles. So far I know only what you all know about the film, if you have seen the trailers that is. Shahrukh is presented with an all new look, amazingly ripped body with stunning six-packs and a new hair style. There's also another treat in store for us all, more than 30 big names of Bollywood are to feature in one of the songs!!

Music of Om Shanti Om is directed by the wonderful duo Vishal-Shekhar. I have listened to all of them, and I absolutely love them (most, not of 'em ;p). Great music and great lyrics penned down by Javed Aktar himself. SO don't wait and start downloading!!!!
